Capacity management by global shipping alliances: findings from a game experiment

چکیده
The present article uses game experiments to understand the dynamics of oligopolistic competition in liner shipping markets. We show how a limited number carriers, interacting over time, acting independently or grouped into global alliances, are able effectively and jointly reduce excess capacity. A serious (called TRALIN) has been designed this end, mimicking market where four five alliances compete on set 12 routes, connecting ports call for few sequential voyages. Carriers initially subject low profits due over-capacity have anticipate competitor capacity decisions vessel deployment simultaneously. Results from 18 experimental games with 4644 were collected statistically analysed confirm main tenets oligopoly theory highlight existence learning effect successive interactions (rounds games). Our results suggest that ‘coordinated’ reduction is more likely occur when competitors limited, but even excessive high, urging need cooperation; amongst participants detected time. Serious flexible tools improving our understanding competition, organization networks, role played by alliances. This tool may help practitioners evolving within competitive process, what factors influence it. Although voluntarily made simplistic purpose experiments, design allows one focus as applied

Container Liner Shipping Alliances, Excess Investment, and Antitrust Immunity
Introducing the unique characteristics of the international marine transport industry, this paper examines whether load capacity is excessive or insufficient in the presence of uncertainty on the future economic situation in terms of both welfare of one country and global welfare. We also consider the effect of alliances and the application of antitrust immunity on capacity building of shipping...
متن کاملIntroduction: Global Alliances in Tourism and Hospitality Management
The development and management of alliances is a critical strategic skill in hospitality and tourism. Very little can happen in these sectors without multiple firms working collaboratively with one another to serve the consumer. All over the world companies are entering into alliances (see Table 1). However, research in this and other sectors suggest that most will fail leaving both partners sa...

The use of Human Resource Management (HRM) practices in the form of ‘bundles’ and in integration with the business strategy of the organisation have been emphasised throughout the HRM literature. These are called the horizontal integration and vertical integration respectively. This article aim at examining the use of these practices in liner shipping industry in which human element plays a vi...
متن کاملOn defensive alliances and strong global offensive alliances
We consider complexity issues and upper bounds for defensive alliances and strong global offensive alliances in graphs. We prove that it is NP-complete to decide for a given 6-regular graph G and a given integer a, whether G contains a defensive alliance of order at most a. Furthermore, we prove that determining the strong global offensive alliance number γô(G) of a graph G is APX-hard for cubi...
متن کاملOn global (strong) defensive alliances in some product graphs
A defensive alliance in a graph is a set $S$ of vertices with the property that every vertex in $S$ has at most one moreneighbor outside of $S$ than it has inside of $S$. A defensive alliance $S$ is called global if it forms a dominating set. The global defensive alliance number of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a global defensive alliance in $G$. In this article we study the global ...
